Description:
|
This Research-Validated program is designed to teach parents and at-risk youth the skills needed to build a trusting family relationship. In a five-session training, youth examine their knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and skills regarding alcohol and drug issues. Another five-session training for youth builds skills to develop responsible independence, set reasonable expectations, take responsibility for their decisions and actions, and learn to regain their sense of trust and connectedness with parents and others. In a separate five-session training, parents explore their feelings about substance use, review the continuum of substance use, abuse, and dependency, and learn about intervention and prevention strategies and treatment options. Parents also learn about the inter-connectedness of parental substance abuse and family dynamics. An additional five-session training for parents builds skills to develop positive parental influences that nurture youth development. Parents and youth have the opportunity to practice their communication and parenting skills in the combined parent/student training role-playing activities that reinforce the importance of open, honest communication in a trusting relationship.
