Material Review Process

Printer-Friendly Format

The California Healthy Kids Resource Center (CHKRC) reviews school health instructional and professional materials. Resources selected for review are evaluated using the Center’s Material Review Board (MRB) process. To the maximum extent possible, materials evaluated as high quality are acquired by the CHKRC and made available for free loan to public and private kindergarten through twelfth grade schools, other youth-serving agencies, and teacher training programs in California.

The CHKRC also reviews published, peer-reviewed evaluation research on health education programs to identify Research-Validated programs. See Research-Validated Programs for a description of this process.

Material Review Board (MRB)
The CHKRC Material Review Board (MRB) is comprised of teachers, health education professionals, and university faculty. CHKRC uses research-based evaluation instruments to review materials.

Submitting Material for CHKRC Review
CHKRC program managers select materials for review. We are unable to review unsolicited materials. Please contact the Center at 510–670-4581 to request to submit materials for review in the following areas:

  • Alcohol and Other Drugs
  • Coordinated School Health
  • Comprehensive Health Education
  • Growth and Development
  • Health Services
  • Injury and Safety
  • Mental, Emotional, and Social Health
  • Nutrition
  • Nutrition Services
  • Personal and Community Health
  • Physical Activity
  • Sexual Health
  • Tobacco
  • Violence

Once CHKRC selects materials for review, we request that publishers submit the following:

  • Two copies of the finished version of the materials, including all accompanying materials so that the full program can be reviewed. The CHKRC only reviews completed materials in their published version. The CHKRC does not review draft material or provide formative feedback during material development.
  • A cover letter that includes:
    1. Title of the material
    2. Identification of the contents as PREVIEW MATERIALS FOR CHKRC REVIEW
    3. Publisher
    4. Publication year
    5. Health education content area(s) addressed
    6. Target grade levels
    7. Program components provided to CHKRC
    8. Number of copies provided to CHKRC
    9. Whom to contact if we have questions
    10. Specify if preview materials are to be returned and if so, include the necessary information

Completion of the Review Process
Allow three to four months for the CHKRC material review process. Individual MRB and staff evaluations of materials are not provided. On request the CHKRC will provide a summary of its review of non-acquired materials to the publisher. To the maximum extent possible, CHKRC acquires multiple copies of the highest rated materials and provides annotations of acquired resources in its online and print catalogs.
